On October 6, 2016, at the Society Iberoamerica of Pediatric Urology (SIUP) national meeting in Panama City, Panama, a joint session with the Society for Pediatric Urology was held. In addition to the presentation of relevant scientific papers, a “point/counter-point” session was held entitled, “Hydronephrosis: American Classification vs. European Classification, Which should I use?” SFU President, John Gatti, championed the American Classification. Marie-Klaire Farrugia, also a member of the SFU executive board, championed the European Classification. There was lively discussion and multiple cases for review. In the end, the recent SFU UTD classification proved reliable, reproducible, and was as effective as any system in characterizing those needing operative intervention. Additionally, it is applicable antenatally and postnatally, and has broad support of the major societies representing Maternal Fetal Medicine, Nephrology, Radiology, and Urology. See the links for the presentations from the session.
